The invincibility factor

Raju Mimi

In politics there are no permanent friends and enemies but only permanent interest. Old foes becoming friends is the current trend today. So the subtlety with which one changes his own stand amuses everyone. The departure of former Zilla Chairperson Dature Miuli from the Congress party fold has revived the confidence in Laeta Umbrey’s supporters. Besides there are external factors which are being played to Umbrey’s advantage.

The internal strife within the Congress party due to hordes of party ticket seekers has led to large number of dissidents joining Trinamul Congress. Although INC has completed its list of 60 candidates, power bickering is not over yet. While PCC Chief Nabum Tuki and Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu have shown solidarity amidst the report of both trying to outdo each other over CM’s post, the people have followed the story well.

While people here in Roing continue to debate on local issues, the concerns drawn could also be a part of larger agenda. The outcome of the poll will have wider ramification extending beyond the constituency. The emergence of Kiren Rijiju as one man army had been a failed attempt, an attempt in the name of change. The effort however is not being capitulated and is being carried forward in the coming assembly election which is backed by a strong lobby of powerful intellectuals. This desire for ‘change’ aptly resonates the youth movement here in Roing which intends to change the old guards and that is practically the same story everywhere. Therefore, youth campaign in support of Umbrey can neither be undermined nor disowned. It is by virtue of fate that today Umbrey is part of the brigade that embodies change.

Also many of the recent developments in the state will shape the future political course. There has been growing demand for Autonomy under sixth schedule of the constitution. The attempt by Nagaland People’s Front for an entry to the state politics has send mixed feelings fuelling speculations among the people. Such effort has now made the people to think of Naga integration as certainty. In western districts the growing Tibetan influence has culminated to demand for a separate administrative and cultural entity. Now with both eastern and western districts asserting their cultural and political identity, the time ahead will bear witness to growing resentment over hegemonic attitude by the powerful tribes in the remaining districts.

Back home, as Umbrey’s youth brigade strives to change the system, it needs to be reassured that they are not taken for a ride. Yet for change and justice it is imperative that political hegemony has to end and the present youth movement deserves praise in their effort. Nevertheless the very voiceless people, whose empowerment could be a reality, cannot risk being on the loosing side. It is this sturdy factor entrenched in the minds of people as Mithi being invincible outweighs all logic and gives place to pragmatism. The rhetoric of neither peace nor development can draw people but the ability to prove that they are part of the winning team will make sense. Having built up a strong intelligence network and committed party workers Mithi acquires all means to predict the mood of the people with precision. So by no means he can ever go wrong in determining the outcome. Umbrey however if wins the election will open a new chapter and bust the notion of Mithi’s invincibility. ITANAGAR, Sept 29: Addressing an election rally at Taliha, MP Lok Sabha Takam Sanjoy said that Congress party has a vision for country and its people and it is a party that stands for development and prosperity. BJP demands increase in security cover

ITANAGAR, Sept 29: BJP in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer has urged for increase in security cover of its nominees for the ensuing assembly elections.

Party General Secretary TaiTagak said that its candidates are being threatened by workers of the rulling party. He further alleged that allurement in the forms of cash and kinds are being offered to withdraw from the race.

He pointed out that its nominees in Hayulliang, Dumporijo and Liromoba (ST) are facing security threats.

The concerned authorities at the districts have been approached by the party candidates but no security coverage given to them so far, he alleged.

The countdown

Tongam Rina

Even as the state prepares for the polls, mood in the Congress camp is upbeat. Of the sixty, it has already secured three seats. Tawang in an unprecedented move sent three representatives uncontested to the Legislative assembly.

Two scenarios seem possible. First that the candidates themselves have proven track records delivered on development agenda and are extremely charismatic. The other could be that democracy has become a martyr so that it paves way to power politics.

We would discuss in leisure why in a vibrant democratic set up like ours, it is possible to send all the representatives elected unopposed from one district. Whatever may be the case, it has got everyone talking in the state. Power, is indeed very infectious and attractive.

The 57 seats thankfully will see some kind of contest. For the first time, in the electoral history of the state, we have so many parties to choose from. In a state where people choose not to contradict anyone in power, it’s a welcome change. We all know what will happen once the final tally is out, given our track record, but none the less it is interesting to begin with.

It’s not a coincidence that aspirants are picking up parties like Nationalist Congress party and All India Trinamool Party.

Loyalty switch is not just a pre poll syndrome. It’s a foregone conclusion that many new milestones will be set once the results are declared. One just hopes that we the people will be given a chance to have our one say before they have their final say.

Keen constest on the cards in Tirap assembly elections

Many New Entrants In The Fray

Unlike in the past elections in sensitive Tirap District, this time there are more candidates in the fray and also more political parties trying their luck in the electoral politics. Some parties are new entrants in the district. Altogether 19 candidates filed nominations in the 7 – Assembly Seats in the district. It may be mentioned here that 4 seats fall in Nocte- Tutsa belt while 3 seats are in Wancho belt. There are 6 new faces in the fray this time and one of them is a woman candidate.

The other fresh entrants in the murky electoral politics are Wanglong Rajkumar from 24 – Namsang, the younger brother of slain former MP, Wangcha Rajkumar in who is contesting on NCP ticket against the 2 time MLA Wangki Lowang of INC. From 5 – Khonsa East there are two new contestants in Wangman Lowangcha from BJP who is Vice President of Central Congress BJP unit and Ngampay Lamaty, former Congress functionary who is contesting as PPA candidate. They will fight it out against sitting MLA Kamthok Lowang, AITC and seasoned politician T. L. Rajkumar of INC who had earlier served as Minister for more than 20 years. Again from 56 – Khonsa West Langwang Sumpa is trying his luck from BJP along with Jitbo Aboh who is pitted against veteran Thajam Aboh of AITC and Yumsen Matey, INC. Gabril D. Wangsu is former reputed journalist and Editor of Dawan Lit – Post from PPA who is pitted against the Env. & Forest  Minister Newlai Tingkhatra.

Other candidates in the fray are Wangki Lowang, INC from 54 – Namsang, T.L.Rajkumar, INC and Kamthok Lowang, AITC. From 55 – Khonsa East. In 57 – Borduria – Bogapani there is straight fight between sitting MLA Wanglin Lowangdong, INC who dislodged veteran leader L. Wanglat in the last Assembly Elections and Tonhang Tongluk of NCP. In 59 Longding – Pumo there is keen contest between sitting MLA Thangwang Wangham of  INC and Tanpho Wangnow of PPA.

In 60 – Pongchau – Wakka there is a triangular contest between Honchun Ngandam, sitting MLA, Anok Wangsa, Ex- MLA from PPA and Kapnai Wasngsa, NCP. The scrutiny of nomination papers was done on 26th Sept.’09 at Khonsa and all papers were found to be in order.

One of the striking features in this election is that contrary to the big hue and cry made in some section of press earlier vis-à-vis presence of Nagaland – based Nagaland People’s Front in Tirap Elections, surprisingly, not a single candidate has joined the party. This augurs well for the district because ulterior motive of certain vested interest groups was doubted for furthering their political agenda by spreading their tentacles in the district which is already affected by insurgency problem. The Students’ Unions and intelligentsia also vehemently opposed the intention of some candidates joining the NPF for obvious reasons.

As usual the Assembly Elections this time is also issue less. In fact, in Arunachal Pradesh there is never an issue during elections. Even if there are a few issues, they are conveniently trampled on the ground. The only visible and audible issues are ‘which candidate is dolling out the biggest freebies like food, drinks, clothes, cash and mithun and buffalo meat to the gullible voters.’ Another issue is ‘which candidate has changed color and jumped in to which party.’ Politics in the State is truly in its infant stage. It has yet to attain age and maturity. Money power still rules the roost. As of now, nothing is clear in Tirap as to which candidate will emerge triumphant. All supporters of all candidates can be seen in every camp arranged by different political parties. Voters go from one camp to another for food, meat and drinks. So, it is very difficult to predict as to whom they would vote. The voters eat everywhere but to whom they will vote is a million dollar question. Nothing can be predicted till the last vote is counted just as in cricket when nothing can be said till the last ball is bowled. But one thing is certain; there will be keen contest in many constituencies.

For now, all are keeping their fingers crossed. But candidates are careful in spending lavishly this time as there are lots of restrictions imposed by Election Commission of India on their expenditure. Moreover, a team of Officers led by a Circle Officer is keeping a strict vigil on this matter and any violation of Model Code of Conduct by any candidates will be booked under relevant law.

Governor wins golf championship, to donate the prize to an orphanage

ITANAGAR, Sep 29: Showing exemplary skills with his never say die attitude and fighting spirit, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen JJ Singh won the winner’s trophy in his category while taking part in a golf tournament organized at Royal Spring Golf Course, Srinagar on September 26 last.

Conducted by the Piramal Health Care Limited in association with Air India and Jammu & Kashmir Tourism, the tournament saw participating a large number of dignitaries, including Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for Health Ghulam Nabi Azad, Bollywood star Suresh Oberoi, Cricket legend Kapil Dev and Cricket Commentator Charu Singh amongst others.

Gen. Singh received a Golden Golf ball and a LCD TV set as a prize.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor expressed his gratitude to all Kashmiris for the warm hospitality and said, we always cherish our stay here. He had studied in Jammu for three years during his student days and had also served as a Brigade Commander in Kashmir valley.  As the Brigade chief, while leading his troops from the front, Gen Singh was wounded in one of the many operations against the terrorist. He was posted at Jammu and Kashmir when the terrorism was at its peak and had played an important role in restoring normalcy in the region.

Referring to the trophy and the prize, which he received as a winner, Gen Singh announced that he will donate the LCD TV set to one of the orphanages in Arunachal Pradesh and the Golden Golf ball trophy, which he won for standing overall first in his category to the Maratha Light Infantry's Regimental centre at Belgaum, Karnataka. It is likely to be displayed at the Chief's gallery in centre raised in honour of Gen Singh, who is the former Chief of Army and Honorary Colonel of the Regiment.

The tournament, which commenced with a ceremonial tee off by Arunachal Pradesh Governor were of two categories--Handicap till 12 and Handicap 13 to 20. The Governor took part in the 13 to 20 handicap category.

The city of Srinagar was the centre of all golfing action as people from across the industry, bureaucracy and the government came together for one of the biggest single-day corporate golf events in the Indian golf calendar. Srinagar’s Royal Springs, which is in fact the result of the seeds sown by the former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, who played a great role in creating this magnificent golf facility, is a truly wonderful course that he has helped nurture and is most certainly one of India’s golfing gems. It may be noted here, the tournament, being held on World Tourism Day, was, in a way, a message being sent by the authorities to invite people to the beautiful valley. With improved infrastructure in the valley, golf is perhaps one of the best mediums to boost tourism. In the last decade-and-a-half the Royal Springs Golf Course (RSGC) has been active in Srinagar and it has seen a surge in golfing tourists, reports PRO to Governor.

There is something in a name

Madam,

Apropos to the eye catching news items published in your esteemed daily on Sept 22 issue under caption “ITANAGAR IS IN ANDHRA PRADESH, SAYS DU”. It is painful experience to have such a situation in our life. It is perhaps Dr. M. Q. Khan is not only the sufferer due to either ignorance of the postal official or mere carelessness of the person who insist in writing in-complete name or addresses.

It is a common site that many citizens or even State Government sportingly writes Arunachal Pradesh as A.P, Ar. Pr., or some times simply Arunachal (i.e, Arunachal Arms Police/ Battalion; Arunachal Bhawan, Arunachal Review etc). If some one writes A.P, so that whether we have to read it as “Arunachal Pradesh” or “Andhra Pradesh” that only God knows. But it is desirable, no body should dis-integrate in putting on of some ones name, say instead of “Tapang Taloh” one should not write “T. Taloh” as in “Minyong” tribe of “Adi” all male names begins with “T”. Therefore, I suggest the concerned authority to rename Arunachal Pradesh as “ARUNACHAL” as it carries same meaning so that no body miss any important interview/meeting un-like Mr. Khan. Further more, I wish to say that if we calculate cost of all writing official letters, writing of sign/office board publicity materials of Arunachal Pradesh (inclusive of State Government NGOs and general public) we spend crores of rupees for word “PRADESH” in a year. It is perhaps instead of they go a long way, we as Arunachalee have to go a long way to correct ourselves to suit austerity measure and to solve confusion once for all.

I invite enlighten people’s valuable comment on the issue to draw a positive public opinion.

Your,

A concerned citizen.

Let a last chance be given to the APPSC aspirants

Madam,

The recent APPSC advertisement for the entry grade selection to various posts has come as a good news to all the job seekers. Even those who are cynical of the present situation have also got stimulated to come in for crushing the hard nut. After all, it is the most prestigious in the public career. So there is no wonder that all the aspirants be given a fair chance to move heaven and earth to appear for the said posts.

Therefore, I would like to appeal to the Arunachal government and all the concerned authorities to raise the upper age limit for APST to 30 years from 28 years with five years relaxation as equivalent to UPSC eligibility criteria. I am sure that it will bring cheers to scores of frustrated unemployed youths especially those who have missed the previous selection just for 2 or 3 marks. In fact many are there who have been waiting patiently to make a last ditch effort to make their dreams come true.

Further, it would be highly appreciated if the authorities relax the Relaxation Rules for APST serving in various registered NGOs especially the technical and higher educational institutions (colleges) in recognition of their meritorious service. To be precise, the upper age relaxation available to the government servants be extended to the individuals in the above institutions for the sake of the equity and fairness in modern and civilized society.

I do hope that the present government committed to people’s welfare will surely bring out a favourable policy to this effect for the interest of the unemployed youth of the state.

Yours,

Danggen Dameng

Democracy should not be reduced to a joke

Madam,

There is a naked display of wealth by our present-day unprincipled and self-seeking politicians. Gone are glorious moments when there were ethical values and principles and gone are the days when there was shining symbols of truth and non-violence. Our great men and leaders like Gandhiji and others would be turning in their graves on knowing the precipitous fall in the principles and values of our politicians.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde had two faces, but our Ziro politicians have many faces. They sway the credulous -illiterate and ignorant masses at the time of elections by mouthing catchy slogans.  But after election they pay lip service to the half-clothed, ill-fed and poorly housed teeming  hundred of voters.

It is time, we have to reverse the parochial trends, wake up to the harsh realities in the country and release our country from the deadly coil of moral degeneracy, otherwise the much-trumpeted 21st Century and tall talk of democracy would be reduced to a joke.

Therefore, leader must stand as a leader to protect, preserve the principles of word or ethical values in democracy. LEADER stands for L-lovable, E-Encourage, A-Accountability, D-Dependable, E-Easy approachable and R-Responsible and role model. If these qualifities are inherent within the leaders, they would really lead and guide the people to right path.

Peace talks only solution to problems

Madam,

The press statements/speeches of  the politicians against another country particularly at the current situation are brimming to the extent of terrible insecurity for the common people like us.

On the other hand Arunachal Pradesh is becoming one of the most corrupted states of the country; the central funds under various schemes for developmental purpose have always been squeezed and swindled to the utmost level.

Our state’s judiciary remains not separated as an individual organ of the governmental system thus violating the doctrine of separation of power under the Constitution.

The manifestation of money transaction among the party workers speaks a loud  in the run up to the assembly election  scheduled on 13th of October. You’ll find more and more critical and significant press statements by politicians having little resemblance with reality.

The only way to speak to Chinese Government is through peace talk which I as a commoner think will be better for the people of our state which shares the immediate and a close remoteness to Chinese terrain. The meeting which has been convened by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on October six in New Delhi be utilized to ease the on-going commotion.

Provide regular GPRS service

Madam,

It has been the long pending demand of the internet freaks of the area that alteast the GPRS services be made active round the clock, if not the much hyped Broadband services that was to be put to work long time back at Bhalukpong area.

It is learnt that Bhalukpong is having DSLAM 64kb under rural scheme. But no such services have been initiated till date. The GPRS services are very poor with its connectivity limited to few minutes sometimes in a week. So, I would like to request the BSNL authority to start providing continuous GPRS services at Bhalukpong, if not the Broadband facilities.
